Traffic Signs and Markings

You should know the meaning of the various traffic signs, road signs and markings on the road surface and how react to it when you see them on the street. Study well the overview in The New Official K53 Manual and you will more easily understand and remember all traffic signs, signals and road markings described in the different traffic sign chapters can of the manual.

Purpose

The purpose of signs, signs and road markings is :

» regulate the safe flow of traffic;
» warn drivers about road conditions;

Representation of signs

Traffic signs come in three different forms:

Temporary signals

Signal regulations


Regulatory signs are used to control driver actions and traffic flow.
This includes Traffic Flow Control signs that regulate the flow of traffic, Mandatory signs that tell you what to do and also Prohibition signs that tell you what is not allowed. It is a criminal offense to disregard any of these signs. If you do this you may be fined. There are temporary versions for some of these signs and they have yellow, red and black color combinations.
 

Warning signs
 

Warning signs indicate dangers or potential dangers that you may encounter in
traffic.
You are usually some distance ahead of the threat, giving you plenty of time to react. The characters are white triangles with a red border and a black symbol or message word. Temporary versions of signs have a yellow background.

When you encounter a warning sign, look out for stop signs, give way signs, or other mandatory signs that may appear. Proceed more slowly and carefully.


Hazard marker panels are red and white (or red and yellow for temporary versions) rectangular panels that are placed over the hazard itself, such as at a sharp bend or into an obstacle on or at the side of the road.

Road markings are signs that are painted on the road surface. They can be divided into regulatory, warning and information signs. They have the same meaning as traffic signs posted on poles or above the road and drivers must respond accordingly. The markings on the surface are painted white, yellow or red depending on the message.


In general, you are not allowed to stop on a red line, you are not allowed to park on a yellow line, and you are not allowed to cross a solid white line, except for those who Cross width from the street.
